Hip Resurfacing:
The LINIA Cromwell Hospital has established the service of Hip Resurfacing and is common practice. The Finsbury resurfacing system metal on metal joint has been shown to be 98% more wear resistant than metal on plastic implants, and this is why we pride ourselves on this system, and our patients are rehabilitated in reasonable time well within national standards.
We have also been completing Hip replacements for many years now and again we have been meeting national standards in the rehabilitation of our clients, and our complication rate is as low as 2%. Our most common practice is cement less hip replacement as this is easier to revise at a later date, and usually common for younger patients, although this operation is not solely determined by age, but is dependent on the patient's level of activity and expectations. Rather than the cemented which is used for the older clients?
Arthroscopy:
Arthroscopic surgery has revolutionised the approach to and treatment of joint disorders. Today, arthroscopy is performed on virtually all major joints of the body, and, because of its applications, the world has gained a greater understanding of joint mechanics, anatomy, and function. Its use continues to serve a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal ailments because of its high degree of clinical accuracy, low morbidity, infrequent complications, and quick recovery time. Additionally, the development and increased use of arthroscopic techniques have played major roles in the ability to perform surgical procedures on an outpatient basis, there by saving money and resources.
LINIA is about to undertake its first shoulder arthroscopies, with the purchase of new attachment to our theatre table and equipment for the procedure.
What is Computer Assisted Navigation Orthopaedic Surgery?
Image Guided Surgery is the latest advancement in Orthopaedic Surgery and is available only in a few centres in the world. It uses technology similar to the location and directional tracking systems used in modern aeroplanes, ships, etc., it is in fact a GPS System for the surgeon. The anatomy of the operating area is assessed and displayed accurately & 3 dimensionally. As the surgeon uses an instrument during surgery, the IGS camera like the GPS satellite calculates its position and then transfers the data to a computer. The whole system offers the surgeon a virtual 3D navigation support system. It allows very precise, safe and perfect surgeries, which is beneficial to the patient.
What Does It Mean to the Patient?
Safety and higher success rates are the two main advantages. In surgeries like joint replacement, better reproduction of natural anatomy allows better movements and longer survival of the joint replacements, which allows a more seamless rehabilitation process through application of bone and muscle preservation procedures.
The LINIA Cromwell Hospital is already completed several navigated knee replacements with the Orthopilot by B. Braun. All the patients have had successful recovery and rehabilitation from the navigation system.
